Kicking Ice : A Graphic Novel About Women's Hockey

Created by Stephanie Phillips

Kicking Ice is about two young, female hockey players, Bella and Skye, learning to play hockey and dreaming of one day playing in the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL). Unfortunately, Bella and Skye deal with bullies who think that playing hockey isn’t for girls. Of course, Bella and Skye prove that kicking ice isn’t just for boys. This project is a celebration of women in sports and the amazing progress of the many pioneers who are helping to make professional women's hockey a reality.

Meet the Team, Part 2
about 6 years ago – Fri, Feb 02, 2018 at 09:02:43 AM

More than 250 backers and 70% funded! We can only imagine this is how good Lisa Chesson from the Buffalo Beauts felt scoring the game winning goal in a shootout against the Boston Pride last weekend. What a BEAUTiful goal.

As we continue our look at the creative team behind Kicking Ice, it only makes sense that we tell you about the artist helping bring all of these hockey players to life on the page. Lee Moder is a veteran of the comic industry, with three decades of experience to his name. He has worked with major companies like DC and Image Comics, and is recognized for his work on titles like "Wonder Woman," "Batman," "Legion of Super-Heroes," and more.

Fun Fact: Lee has worked with Kicking Ice editor, Ron Marz, on a vampire-slaying comic called "Shinku," as well as the coming-of-age fantasy comic "Dragon Prince," both from Image Comics. In case you don’t know who Ron is, he is the co-creator of Kyle Rayner, one of the Green Lanterns.

Yeah, our team is pretty cool.

Residing in the Pittsburgh area, Lee is a Penguins fan. However, Lee knows who the #BestKessel really is!

Thank you again to all of you for backing this project and sharing with friends and family. Your investment in this project is what make this community amazing. Keep Kicking Ice!

Over 60% funded and selected as a featured project by Kickstarter... Not a bad Wednesday at all! We are just so excited that we thought we would show off some Kicking Ice swag.

You have probably noticed that most of our pledge levels come with a Kicking Ice wristband. A giant shipment of these awesome bands has just arrived at the Ominous Press headquarters and the team feels like kicking some ice!

Along with the wristbands, we also have some other cool rewards, like pucks, shirts, jerseys, pins, and stickers. You can check out the Kickstarter page for more information about all of the available rewards!

Thank you all for being a part of the Kicking Ice community. We are so happy to have you on the team and look forward to posting more updates with rewards and artwork in the coming days!

Time to Kick Ice!
about 6 years ago – Fri, Jan 26, 2018 at 05:44:28 PM

First off, we would like to say thank you to all of you for supporting this campaign! In less than two days we are already over 30% funded and our Kicking Ice team has grown to over 120 backers. That is AMAZING!

As we progress, we are excited to unveil more artwork from the book and some additional rewards. The first cover that we have displayed for the book has players from the Boston Pride and the Connecticut Whale. If you’re a fan of the Metropolitan Riveters or the Buffalo Beauts, have no fear! We've got you covered and can’t wait to show you how all of the teams are represented. As a teaser, one of our next surprises may involve a certain captain of the Metropolitan Riveters. Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement soon!

We couldn't be more excited to bring this book to life and have you all on the team to help us do that. None of this is possible without you
