Kicking Ice : A Graphic Novel About Women's Hockey
Created by Stephanie Phillips
Kicking Ice is about two young, female hockey players, Bella and Skye, learning to play hockey and dreaming of one day playing in the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL). Unfortunately, Bella and Skye deal with bullies who think that playing hockey isn’t for girls. Of course, Bella and Skye prove that kicking ice isn’t just for boys. This project is a celebration of women in sports and the amazing progress of the many pioneers who are helping to make professional women's hockey a reality.

We hope everyone is as excited about Free Comic Book Day as we are! Be sure to celebrate by stopping by your local comic shop on May 5 to check out some awesome free comics. If you happen to be in the Tampa area, Stephanie and Jamie will be at Uncanny Heroes with exclusive preview copies of Kicking Ice. These short preview books will give you a glimpse at some of the artwork and characters in Kicking Ice.
We are also excited to show off the custom bookplates that will come signed with all physical copies of Kicking Ice. Designed by Jamie Jones, each bookplate will also be numbered with the numbers appearing on the jersey back.
Thank you all for continuing to support this project! We look forward to seeing you at comic shops and conventions (maybe even an ice rink or two) throughout the summer.

The team has been hard at work to finish Kicking Ice. We are so thrilled with the progress and can't wait to show you the completed project. As we work towards our print deadline, we have a couple of ways for you to get your hands on some advanced story previews. As we enter a summer filled with amazing conventions around the states, the team will be traveling to show off the book and talk to our awesome community.
First up, if you're in the Tampa Bay area, head to Uncanny Heroes (Tampa) on Free Comic Book Day (May 5) to meet writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Jamie Jones. Stephanie and Jamie will be at the shop signing preview copies of Kicking Ice starting at 11am.
Next, we are headed up north to Buffalo, NY to attend Nickel City Con from May 18-20. Since Buffalo happens to be the home of one of the four NWHL teams, we decided to do something a little special for you Beauts fans:
Local Buffalo artist Joanna Eberts created a stunning cover tribute to the Buffalo Beauts that you can get your hands on at the convention. We will have preview copies of the book with the Buffalo tribute cover, as well as art prints available at the show.
If that isn't cool enough, Joanna will be joining us at the convention to sign this amazing cover. Joanna will be joining Stephanie Phillips, Jamie Jones, and Ominous Press. You can get advanced tickets and learn more about the convention at www.nickelcitycon.com.
Finally, we wanted to officially welcome artist Jamie Jones to the Kicking Ice team. In order to ensure that Kicking Ice arrives to you in a timely fashion, Jamie has joined Lee Moder to work on the interior artwork. Jamie Jones is a Florida born cartoonists who loves his bow ties and has worked on titles such as Lucha Underground (El Rey), Joey Ryan: Big in Japan (Chido Comics), Five Ghosts Special, and A Constant Distraction backup stories for Violent Love (Image), Puerto Rico Strong (Lion Forge) and has self published Dodger: A Western Saga of Mechs and Mayhem, and his ongoing anthology project, The Whisper.
Jamie is Tampa Bay Lightning and Metropolitan Riveters fan. If you look at his work for Kicking Ice, it is obvious that Jamie brings energy and passion to the story.
We look forward to seeing you on our travels and will announce more convention appearances soon.

Dear Kicking Ice Backers,
I never could have anticipated the overwhelming amount of support Kicking Ice received from all of you. When I started writing Kicking Ice, it was just me, a computer, and two fluffy cats. Then, the project grew to encompass great artists, then a publisher, then the National Women's Hockey League, and then, amazingly, 779 readers, supporters, and team members. Kicking Ice is only possible thanks to your contributions.
I am honored that all of you believe in our team and this project. I set out to create a project that would honor and celebrate the amazing athletes helping to pave the way for the next generation of strong and empowered players, and I am so thrilled that you all share this goal with me. I can't thank you enough and can't begin to tell you how excited I am to get the book into your hands!
While the campaign has ended, our entire team will continue to keep you updated on the progress of the book. Currently, we anticipate a release in late August. For those of you as impatient as I am, we will have plenty of cool stuff happening between now and then. We will be releasing a convention schedule for the creative team very soon. If you find us at any of these events, we promise to have some cool, exclusive Kicking Ice swag.
Thank you all so much!

3 Days, 2 New Stretch Goals

With three days left in the campaign, we have met our third stretch goal! This means that all copies of Kicking Ice will come with added pages filled with information about the history of women's hockey, as well as artwork from the desks of our creators. We have an amazing list of writers and artists contributing to this section of the book, which will contain information about the National Women's Hockey League, Olympic hockey, the Canadian Women's Hockey League, and much more.
Since you helped us blast through that stretch goal so quickly, we have added a couple more goals that we think you'll really enjoy.
We also have an update on color for the cover that we will use for the hardcover edition of Kicking Ice. The cover art is by Amanda Conner and Dave Johnson. We are so thrilled and thankful to have two amazing artists contributing to this campaign.
